A Mercedes-Benz response on safety, warranty, support, and premium ownership when more brands now claim five stars.

What Matters Most When Every Brand Claims Five Stars

pyfoi recently published an independent article examining why Chinese car brands are no longer a fringe story in New Zealand. The research raised important points: several Chinese-brand SUVs now hold five-star ANCAP ratings, warranty terms are becoming easier to compare in writing, and support networks have grown materially. We agree with pyfoi's core conclusion that buyers should assess every vehicle with the same disciplined, model-specific comparison rather than relying on country of origin as a shortcut. That is exactly the kind of evaluation we welcome.

Why this conversation matters to us

The shift pyfoi identified is real. More brands now clear the baseline on safety, warranty, and support. That is genuinely good for New Zealand buyers. But it also raises a question the article touched on without fully resolving: once baseline credibility is established across more of the market, what should you compare next? We designed our vehicles, our ownership terms, and our support structure around the idea that driving pleasure, maximum safety, and refinement over years of everyday use are not extras. They are the substance of premium ownership. That perspective is more relevant now, not less, precisely because the field has widened.

How we address what pyfoi raised

Model-specific safety, not badge assumptions. pyfoi rightly argued that buyers should judge the exact vehicle, variant, and build date. We strongly support that discipline. Our EQE SUV, for example, holds a 5-star ANCAP rating with sub-scores of 87% adult occupant protection, 92% child occupant protection, 80% vulnerable road user protection, and 86% safety assist [1]. Critically, that rating applies to all variants except the AMG EQE 53 4MATIC+ SUV [1]. That variant-level specificity is exactly the kind of detail pyfoi advocates, and it is the standard we hold ourselves to.

A five-star badge is only the start. The underlying ANCAP sub-scores show the detail buyers should compare.

But a five-star result is the starting point. The experience of safety in daily driving matters too. Across our current range, we integrate intelligent systems such as Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Active Lane Keeping Assist, and Traffic Sign Assist [2][3]. These are designed to support you on motorways, in mixed traffic, and over long distances, reducing fatigue and helping you respond to changing conditions. We have not yet published independent NZ-specific data on how these systems perform across all local road types, so we will not overstate that claim. What we can say is that the technology is there, active, and standard across key models.

Written warranty and battery cover. pyfoi highlighted that published warranty terms now let buyers compare who carries the financial risk if something major fails. We provide a 5-year warranty for passenger cars first registered on or after 1 August 2022, and our high-voltage battery cover extends to 8 years or 160,000 km, whichever comes first [4]. These terms are published, verifiable, and designed to give you clarity before you commit.

Support that accounts for premium expectations. pyfoi's research noted that the support question has shifted from whether a network exists to whether it is adequate for your region and usage. We publish a retailer locator, service booking pathways, and roadside assistance details for New Zealand [5][6][7]. Our breakdown policy specifies that if the nearest authorised service retailer is more than 50 km away, the vehicle may be transported to a suitably equipped service centre recommended by Mercedes-Benz New Zealand [7]. We acknowledge that published response-time benchmarks and regional capacity data would strengthen this picture further.

Practical family usability with premium refinement. pyfoi observed that several Chinese SUVs now compete well on boot space, child-seat access, and standard safety technology. We recognise that practicality is no longer a differentiator on its own. Our GLC offers up to 620 litres of boot volume [8], and our SUV range is built around the idea that comfort, cabin quality, and long-distance refinement should accompany that space, not compete with it.

Electrification without compromise. pyfoi referenced public NZ guidance showing home-charged EVs can cost meaningfully less per 100 km than petrol equivalents. We are not chasing a lowest-running-cost argument. Instead, we offer premium electrification: access to hundreds of selected fast charging stations across New Zealand [2], 8-year battery cover [4], and an ownership experience where performance and luxury are not sacrificed for efficiency.

Used vehicle provenance. pyfoi warned that a used hybrid or EV from a familiar badge may carry hidden risk if no meaningful battery warranty or health check remains. Our Certified Pre-Owned programme addresses this directly. Every vehicle is NZ-new only, undergoes a 118-point check by factory trained technicians, carries full Mercedes-Benz service history, includes complimentary 24-hour roadside assistance, and is backed by a minimum 2-year unlimited-kilometre factory-backed warranty [4].

The evidence behind these claims

Our warranty, battery cover, and Certified Pre-Owned terms are published directly on our New Zealand site [4]. The EQE SUV's 5-star ANCAP rating and variant-specific applicability are independently verified [1]. NZTA data confirms that about 40% of New Zealand's light vehicles still carry 1- or 2-star safety ratings [9][10], reinforcing pyfoi's point that upgrading to a newer, safer vehicle is one of the most consequential decisions you can make. Our assistance technologies, support infrastructure, and SUV specifications are published and verifiable [2][3][5][6][7][8].
